Helping Children Express, Heal, and Grow Through Play

What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is an evidence-based counseling approach that helps children express thoughts and emotions they may not yet have the words to describe. Through toys, games, art, and imaginative play, children are able to communicate in a natural and comfortable way while building trust with their therapist. In a safe and supportive environment, they can process difficult experiences, develop healthy coping skills, and strengthen emotional awareness. Play therapy also supports problem-solving, self-confidence, and positive social skills, helping children feel more understood, resilient, and empowered in their everyday lives.

How Play Therapy Helps

Play therapy may benefit children who experience:

  • Emotional dysregulation or frequent meltdowns

  • Anxiety, fears, or excessive worry

  • Behavioral challenges at home or school

  • Trauma or adverse experiences

  • Difficulty with transitions or change

  • Grief and loss

  • Social skill challenges

  • Attention or impulse-control concerns

  • Neurodivergence, including autism

What Happens in Play Therapy Sessions?

During sessions, children may engage in:

  • Therapeutic and symbolic play

  • Art and creative expression

  • Storytelling and role play

  • Emotional identification activities

  • Coping and problem-solving skill development

While sessions feel fun and natural, each activity is intentionally selected to support clinical treatment goals.

Our Therapeutic Approach

Family involvement is an important part of treatment. RMCS supports caregivers through:

  • Parent consultation and education

  • Collaboration on behavior strategies

  • Support with generalizing skills at home and school

Our goal is to help children apply progress beyond the therapy room

Caregiver Involvement

Play therapy is commonly recommended for children ages 3–12, though services may extend based on developmental needs.

Children do not need strong verbal skills to benefit — play therapy meets them where they are.
